As well as wine, Conegliano is renowned for its art
The important Renaissance landscape artist Giovanni Battista Cima was born here and the old town centre is a treasure trove of artistic gems.
There’s an indissoluble bond between Giovanni Battista Cima and Conegliano. The painter found inspiration for his works in his home town: the hills, the castle and the walls that can still be seen today often appear in the landscape in the backgrounds. His birthplace in the middle of the old town centre is well worth a visit. Art plays a prominent role throughout the town centre. For example, the exteriors of all of the buildings on Via XX Settembre are decorated. The most notable of them all is the exquisite Sala dei Battuti.
Accessed via the courtyard of the Cathedral, it’s one of the most significant landmarks in the town. It’s a rectangular old meeting room for a flagellant confraternity that Francesco da Milano embellished with a fresco cycle in the first half of the 16th century. After the hall was extended, the cycle was completed by Pozzoserrato and other local artists. Scenes from both the Old and the New Testament are shown. Next to the Sala dei Battuti is the Sala del Capitolo, where some highly valuable tapestries can be found. The entire façade is decorated with frescoes by Pozzoserrato showing biblical scenes, sibyls and prophets.
